______________________________________________________________________ * * * ISDC Job Announcement 20-AUG-2007 * * * ______________________________________________________________________ Job offer for ISDC Responsible System Administrator =================================================== The ISDC -------- The ISDC was created in 1995 as the Science Data Centre for ESA's INTEGRAL mission. Today we have some 30 staff members from many European countries. We are also involved in other astrophysical projects like Planck, Gaia and some smaller projects. The ISDC is attached to the Astronomical Observatory of the Geneva University in Switzerland. The ISDC computing infrastructure is fully based on Solaris/Linux and consists today of some 200 CPUs and some 30 TB of disk storage. The size of our infrastructure will significantly grow in the coming years. Job description --------------- The ISDC is offering a position as Responsible System Administrator. The main task is the maintenance of the existing ISDC computing infrastructure. This infrastructure is used operationally for the INTEGRAL project on a 24/24 - 7/7 basis. On-call support in case of urgent problems and occasional work during non-office hours are required for this position. Some 50 on- and offsite users with various backgrounds from science, software engineering and administration are also using this infrastructure for their daily work. Assistance at all levels is part of the job we are offering. In addition you will be in charge of the evolution of the ISDC computing infrastructure to match new requirements emerging from upcoming projects at the ISDC. Your profile ------------ You should contact us, if * you have some experience with the administration of production UNIX systems, * you have a good understanding of architectural concepts like computing clusters, storage arrays (RAID, NFS etc), * you have good system and user problem solving skills at all levels, * you are not afraid to directly work with hardware, * you are willing to carry a mobile phone for emergency contacts at any time and to occasionally work non-office hours. Additional days off are offered for compensation. * you are able and willing to learn things really fast and to work in an autonomous way right from the start, * you have at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, physics or related domains * your English is good and you are at ease in an international environment. As the successful candidate you have experience in one or more of the following areas: NFS/automounter, SCSI/FC devices, Kickstart/Jumpstart installations, IP filtering systems, handling tape backups and network printing using CUPS. Strong shell scripting skills will be also an important asset. The work can start as soon as possible. The contract is renewable on a yearly basis.
