______________________________________________________________________ * * * ISDC News 10-MAR-2009 * * * ______________________________________________________________________ Postdoctoral and PhD research positions in high-energy astrophysics =================================================================== The ISDC Data Centre for Astrophysics is a research institute attached to the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Geneva (Switzerland) contributing to several space missions (in particular INTEGRAL and Planck) and ground based (in particular CTA) projects. ISDC scientists are also involved in the development of future high-energy missions (Astro-H, Simbol-X, IXO). Our main scientific focus is physics of X-ray binaries, pulsars, stellar formation, massive stars, supernova remnants, active galactic nuclei (AGN), galaxy clusters, gamma-ray bursts and dark matter / cosmology using all types of astronomical facilities. Some 40 people from more than 10 countries work together at ISDC. ______________________________________________________________________ The ISDC is currently developing the high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics domain, modeling and interpreting the very-high energy data in the multi-wavelength context. For this purpose post-doctoral and PhD research positions are opening. The successful PostDoctoral candidate(s) will carry out research on high-energy processes in various types of astrophysical sources, such as AGN, gamma-ray loud binary (GRLB) systems, galaxy clusters. The research will include the analysis of multi-wavelength data, including the data of the Fermi and INTEGRAL gamma-ray observatories, and/or theoretical/numerical modeling of particle acceleration and interactions. Candidates with experience in numerical modeling of general-relativistic plasmas and/or reduction of very-high-energy gamma-ray data are particularly encouraged to apply. The PhD students will be involved either in the reduction and interpretation of the X-ray and gamma-ray data on AGN, GRLB and galaxy clusters or in the analytical and numerical modeling of particle acceleration and cascades in high-energy sources or in the modeling of physical processes in vicinity of black holes and neutron stars. The successful candidates will also participate to the CTA related project activities at the ISDC. For further information, please contact: Andrii Neronov and/or Roland Walter ______________________________________________________________________ In the context of further development of space-borne high-energy astrophysics and re-enforcement of its INTEGRAL activities the ISDC is seeking to fill a PostDoctoral and PhD positions. The successful PostDoctoral candidate is expected to conduct an active research program centered on INTEGRAL science and data. He or she will also have experience with X-ray observations in general, in particular in the hard X-rays. The Ph.D. student position will be devoted to the physics of compact sources. The study of AGN populations, their evolution and their spectral properties in the X-ray to hard X-rays could be of particular interest. The successful candidates will also participate to the INTEGRAL related project activities at the ISDC. For further information, please contact: Stéphane Paltani and/or Roland Walter ______________________________________________________________________ Candidates for PostDoc positions should send a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a description of research interests and plans. They should also arrange for two letters of recommendation. Candidates for the PhD positions should send a motivation letter and a curriculum vitae. They should also provide the name of one reference. All correspondence should be sent by e-mail. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. The applications should be sent to Marie-Claude Dunand ______________________________________________________________________ |
