______________________________________________________________________ * * * ISDC News 04-FEB-2014 * * * ______________________________________________________________________ Public INTEGRAL Observations of the Supernova SN2014J ===================================================== On 31 January 2014, INTEGRAL has started Target of Opportunity observations on the recently discovered type Ia SN2014J in M82 (ATel #5835). At a distance of about 3.5 Mpc, this is the closest type-Ia SN discovered in the past 4 decades. This SN event is unique, and INTEGRAL is the only observatory currently capable of doing high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy, which may help to constrain the models of the SN explosion. Therefore, INTEGRAL will observe this SN almost exclusively for the next months. If successful, these observations are expected to constitute a reference in SNIa science for years to come. Part of total observing time on SN2014J will be composed of 2 Msec from an approved INTEGRAL Target of Opportunity program (PI: Jordi Isern, ICE-CSIC/IEEC, Spain). The Early data of this observations, performed in revolution 1381 and 1382 will be publicly available in the ISDC archive, populated about one month after the observation is performed (i.e. as CONS data). The second part of the observation will be immediately accessible to all users already in their near real time version (NRT data). An additional, comparable, amount of INTEGRAL observing time has been awarded by the Project Scientist, on request by the INTEGRAL SN community, to maximise the scientific returns and will also be publicly available. The first INTEGRAL observation of SN2014J has been done in Revolution 1380, and the associated data are publicly available. See the page: http://www.isdc.unige.ch/integral/archive#DataRelease for instructions on how to retrieve public data. The strategy of further Target of Opportunity observations depends on the evolution of this SN. The important change in our planning due to this exceptional event implies that various previously foreseen programmes will not be carried out. ISOC will do everything it can to minimise the consequences this will have on the accepted programme. The short-term plan is available on the ISOC scheduling page at: http://integral.esac.esa.int/isocweb/schedule.html?action=intro. ______________________________________________________________________ |
